Youth mobility in London

When I applied to be on the PRODEST programme all I knew is that I would be given some basic filmmaking training and the opportunity to travel to Slovakia in the summer and I was sold! What I didn't anticipate is that I would also have the chance to meet some amazing people along the way as well.

During the 3 day residential trip on the outskirts of London, we got to connect with the other participants from all across Europe and the lack of internet really forced us to be sociable. Whilst the first two day were full of information and we learnt a lot about filmmaking, my personal highlight was the final day where the country leaders organised icebreaker and bonding activities for everyone. As a secretly competitive person I made sure to use all my skills to win each of these activities.

We were very lucky with our surroundings and the unpredictable English weather for once was on our side. This allowed us to take walks in the forest before sunset and our evening meal at the Youth Hostel where we were staying. During this time we also got to chat with the Slovakian team that joined us and found that we had a lot of things in common.

Finally on the Thursday we had the opportunity to show our visiting friends around our city. Although I was not able to attend the beginning of the day due to work commitments, I heard all about their visit to Greenwich and Westminster where a few of them even had the chance to appear of national TV. After a few hours of shopping on Oxford Street we ended the day with a special treat of Thai rolled ice cream to which we added Mila biscuits for a special Slovakian taste.

Despite the short time we had, we shared some lovely memories with our new friends and I look forward to meeting them again later in the year, but this time in their hometown.

ENG:

How to film a story so people learn from it? How to use digital tools to tell a story? How to boost entrepreneurship skills in young people?

Those were the questions we addressed in "PRODEST" Training Course for young people and youth workers in London on March 19-24. The TC was aimed mainly to prepare teams of youngsters from Poland, UK, Slovakia, Spain and France to film interviews with young entrepreneurs in their countries, which would be a base for digital storytelling videos - educational tools to use in non-formal learning activities to develop entrepreneurial skills.

In the same time participants of this mobility were getting together their strengths to organize the process of video shooting and editing, write and test scenarios, prepare resources and motivate each other to do it, which appeared to be...exercising entrepreneurial skills.

This is how polish participants described this experience:

The project turned out to be very successful and full of useful knowledge. Among others I got a chance to familiarize myself with technics of shooting a video, which does not require professional equipment or advanced skills. Apparently, already a proper framing, adequate light and sound, conscious usage of available resources, all coupled with an interesting concept of presenting a story, can provide a magnificent result.

Ewa, 24

I understood how important in movie making is sound and that I have to be conscious about plenty of noise sources during recording. I`ve seen how does movie editing programme look like and I've learned some basics of it, including the patterns of how story should be organised in the movie (percentage of introduction etc.). I felt it before, but I saw it also during this week that I am able to communicate easily my ideas and in understandable way. I see that I should develop listening skill cause sometimes it seems to be hard for me. I see also great value of teamwork in obtaining goals. Once again I noticed that we shouldn't compartmentalise people. At the end of training some people showed their skills which was not visible from first look.

Kaja, 24

It may be cliché, but I really learned basics of video recording. It was a black magic for me before and now I have a general imagination of the process, equipment and software. I also learned what can go wrong during the process adopting the preventive approach saying "I`m getting ready for the worst case scenario", because, as it appeared, it was useful to take that into consideration while planning video shooting. Practical part was also great to do, to see how much of what Jonathan (the trainer) said was true (and it was!) and realise my own limitations in this area. I feel more confident to plan my development in the field of video-making. Aims of the project are much more clear to me now and I feel that this training has linked what was detached so far.

Estera, 23

For me training in London was great opportunity to learn more about making videos. I didn't know many things about interviewing, I hope it will be helpful for me when I will be doing interviews and editing by myself. I've met many interesting people there. It was really nice occasion to practice my English and have a nice chat with great and different people from all over the Europe. I'm really happy that i could take part in this project. I want to thanks everyone for keeping me company, I appreciate it.

Long story short: great people, great team and pretty London

Agata, 20

The training in London was great occasion for learning and fun. I met a lot of amazing people and heard a lot of inspiring stories. Because of this meeting I understood the idea of Prodest and realized that every man has competencies which can develop. The project gave me a lot of power to action.
